Luis Barragan Tour

During our time in Mexico City we joined a half day tour to explore some the most iconic work of influential Mexican Architect Luis Barragan.

The tour included a stop on the outskirts of the City at Torres de Satelite (The Satellite Towers), five concrete sculptures of varying heights and colours, all triangular on plan built to mark the future of a new district, Cuidad Satelite. Barragan worked with sculptor Mathias Goeritz.

The second stop and the main event was the spectacular Cuadra San Cristobal, which combines a residence, stables and fountain. This place was stunning. Barragan’s use of shapes, colour and texture create incredible depth, framing and intrigue as you walk around the property with an architectural surprise round almost every corner.

His colour palette, here and also his other work, was influenced by nature, the pink from bougainvillea, rusty red from flowers of tabachin, light purple from jacaranda flowers, blue walls are used to extend the cloudless Mexican sky. The colours contrast perfectly with the green of the trees and grass.

It was a joy to have the opportunity to photograph this iconic Architecture. The tour itself was excellent and highly inspirational and definitely one to add to your itinerary if you visit Mexico City, check out tour options at The Travelling Beetle.
